You need a hydraulic flow meter rated for the maximum working pressure of the pump. Many mobile systems run at 250 bar to 420 bar. A standard water flow meter will burst. Choose a meter with a stainless steel or ductile iron body and Viton or FKM seals.


Check the oil viscosity. Hydraulic oil is often ISO VG 32, 46, or 68. At cold start the viscosity can exceed 100 cSt. An oval gear flow meter handles viscous oil well. A turbine meter loses accuracy when viscosity changes. So for high-pressure pump diagnostics we prefer oval gear or gear flow meters.


Confirm the flow range. A small excavator may pump 20 to 40 L/min. A large mining shovel may push 400 to 800 L/min. Choose a meter with the correct DN size. DN10 works for 0.5 to 20 L/min. DN25 covers 10 to 120 L/min. DN50 covers 50 to 500 L/min.


Most engineers skip one thing. They forget to check the case drain flow. The case drain line is a direct window into pump internal leakage. Install a small flow meter there too. In practice, this catches piston wear earlier than main flow tests.


Installation on a High-Pressure Pump

Shut down the machine and release hydraulic pressure at the accumulator bleed valve. Confirm zero pressure with a test gauge. Then find the pump outlet test point. Many machines have a diagnostic port with a DN10 or DN15 quick coupling.


Connect the flow meter in series with the test hoses. Use hoses rated for 400 bar minimum. Tighten all fittings. Air in the system causes high and unstable readings. Bleed the meter and hoses before starting.


If you test the case drain, connect a small oval gear meter rated for 10 to 40 L/min. The pressure is usually lower there, under 10 bar, but the temperature can be high. Use a meter with a high-temperature option if the oil exceeds 80 °C.


Start the machine and let the oil warm up. Run the pump at a known engine rpm. Record the pressure from a calibrated gauge. Then read the flow rate. Do this at two or three pressure points. For example, test at 50 bar, 150 bar, and 250 bar.


Reading the Data for Pump Diagnostics

Compare the measured flow at each pressure point with the pump rated flow from the OEM curve. Fixed displacement gear pumps show nearly constant flow until pressure rises. A healthy pump may lose 5 to 8 percent flow at maximum pressure due to normal internal leakage.


A loss of 15 percent or more means trouble. Check the case drain flow. On a healthy piston pump, case drain flow is usually 1 to 4 percent of rated flow

Erratic flow readings often mean air in the oil. Check the suction line for leaks. A collapsing suction hose can do the same. Fix the suction side before condemning the pump.
