Oil flow measurement fails quietly. A sensor reads fine at 80 percent of range and then drifts at low flow. We see this on customer sites often. Oil Type and Viscosity Drive the Sizing Decision

Diesel at 40 °C has a dynamic viscosity around 2 to 5 cP. Light fuel oil may be 5 to 50 cP. Heavy fuel oil can be 100 to 700 cP at 50 °C. Some industrial gear oils reach 500 cP or more at room temperature. If oil starts cold, viscosity may be 10 times higher. Size for the worst case.

Viscosity affects pressure drop and Reynolds number. Oval gear meters measure volume directly and tolerate high viscosity. Coriolis meters measure mass directly and do not depend on Reynolds number. Turbine meters need a minimum Reynolds number, so they are risky for heavy oil. Vortex meters are poor for oil because viscosity damps the vortex shedding signal.

Most engineers skip this part. They match the meter connection to the pipe size. That is a safe mechanical fit but not a safe measurement. A DN50 pipe does not mean you need a DN50 meter. A smaller meter with reducers often gives better accuracy.

Start with Oval Gear for Diesel and Light Fuel Oil

For diesel, gas oil, light fuel oil, and clean lubricants, oval gear is our default recommendation. Oval gear meters handle 1 to 2000 cP without special correction. A DN15 unit can cover 0.5 to 30 L/min. A DN25 unit can cover 2 to 100 L/min. Accuracy is typically plus or minus 0.5 percent of reading. Some versions reach plus or minus 0.2 percent.

Use Coriolis When You Need Mass Flow or Custody Transfer

Coriolis mass flow meters are the right choice for heavy fuel oil, bunker fuel, lubricant blending, and any process needing kg/h rather than L/min. A Coriolis meter reports mass flow, density, and temperature in one instrument. Accuracy on oil is often plus or minus 0.1 to 0.2 percent of rate.

l if flow stays in the upper 70 percent of range. But turbine bearings wear with dirty oil. Viscosity changes shift the K factor. Vortex meters are poor for most oil because heavy oil suppresses the vortex shedding signal. Thermal mass flow meters are designed for gas, not liquid oil. Do not use a thermal gas meter on diesel or lubricant lines.

Sizing Formula and Minimum Flow

Size the meter for actual flow range, not pipe size. For oval gear, target normal flow between 20 and 80 percent of the meter full range. If normal diesel flow is 8 L/min, a DN15 meter with 0.5 to 30 L/min range is a good fit. If normal flow is 50 L/min, use DN25. Do not use DN50 just because the pipe is DN50. The meter will run near 10 percent of range and error will increase.

For Coriolis, pressure drop is the main limit. High viscosity oil creates more pressure drop. A DN15 Coriolis on 500 cP oil may drop 1.5 bar at 20 kg/h. If your pump can only tolerate 0.5 bar pressure loss, move up to DN25. Send viscosity in cP or cSt, density in kg/m3, temperature in °C, and flow in kg/h or L/min. Signal Output and Installation for Oil Service

Choose pulse output for local totalizing. Choose 4-20 mA HART for PLC integration. Choose RS485 Modbus when you have many meters on a skid. Oval gear meters do not need long straight pipe because they are positive displacement. Coriolis meters also tolerate bends and valves nearby. If your oil releases dissolved gas, install an air eliminator upstream. Air bubbles distort volume readings. A diesel truck loading skid in Africa had totalizer drift until an air eliminator was added.

Diesel generator fuel consumption. A DN10 oval gear meter with pulse output, 0.2 to 10 L/h for small standby sets. For larger engines, use DN15 with 0.5 to 30 L/min.

Heavy fuel oil to a boiler burner. A DN15 Coriolis meter with 4-20 mA HART and ATEX Zone 1. Mass flow handles viscosity swings and density confirms fuel grade. Normal flow 50 to 200 kg/h.

Lubricant batch blending. A DN10 Coriolis meter with RS485 Modbus. Batch accuracy is within plus or minus 0.2 percent of target mass. Density signal helps confirm base oil grade.
