Flow Meter Requirements Checklist: Temperature, Pressure, Chemical Compatibility and Sizing

Quick Answer: Before you request a flow meter quote, collect pipe size in DN, fluid name and concentration, operating temperature in °C, and operating pressure in bar. These inputs decide whether you need an electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex, ultrasonic, oval gear or thermal mass meter. If exact numbers are missing, send the normal and maximum values from your process data.


Start With Pipe Size and Flow Range

Most sizing mistakes start with a guessed flow range or missing pipe schedule. Pipe size is not the same as flow capacity. A DN50 line can carry 2 m³/h of water or 20 m³/h depending on pump head. We ask for DN15 to DN300 plus minimum, normal and maximum flow rate in kg/h, m³/h or L/h. In practice, engineers often give one flow value. That is not enough. A meter that works at 15 m³/h may drift badly at 0.5 m³/h. Electromagnetic and Coriolis meters tolerate 20:1 turndown or higher. Vortex meters lose signal at low velocity. Oval gear meters handle low flow well with viscous oil.


Temperature Limits by Flow Meter Type

Temperature changes material strength, liner life and sensor electronics. A standard electromagnetic flow meter with PTFE liner and 316L electrodes works from -25 °C to 120 °C. A PFA liner version can run at 180 °C. Coriolis meters with stainless steel tubes handle -50 °C to 200 °C. Vortex meters can reach 250 °C to 350 °C depending on sensor design. Oval gear meters for diesel or heavy oil normally sit at 10 °C to 150 °C. For steam, use a vortex meter with integrated temperature and pressure compensation. Tell us the maximum temperature, not just normal. A line may run at 90 °C water but see 130 °C during cleaning in place cycles in food plants. This is common in dairy and beverage sites in Southeast Asia.

Pressure Ratings and Flange Matching

Pressure data is easy to collect but often ignored until after the quote. A DN80 meter rated for PN16 will not survive a discharge line at 25 bar. For water and wastewater, PN16 flanges are common. For oil and gas skids, ANSI 300 or PN40 bodies are typical. Coriolis meters handle high pressure naturally because the tubes are small and thick. Electromagnetic meters need liner and flange rating to match the process. We have seen a customer in the Middle East request a seawater flow meter for a desalination plant at 64 bar. The solution was a 316L electromagnetic flow meter with PFA liner and ANSI 600 flanges. Check pressure spikes from pumps and valve closure too. Water hammer can push a 10 bar system to 30 bar for milliseconds. If the application has fast shut off valves, tell us before sizing.


Chemical Compatibility Checklist

Fluid chemistry decides wetted materials. For sodium hypochlorite, avoid 316L electrodes and use titanium or Hastelloy C. For hydrochloric acid, use tantalum electrodes and PTFE liner. For sulfuric acid at high concentration, 316L may work at low temperature but fails at high velocity. For seawater, 316L is not enough for continuous service. Use super duplex or add cathodic protection. For food grade edible oil, choose 304 or 316L polished surfaces with tri clamp connections. Last year a customer in Vietnam asked us about a solvent blend with methyl ethyl ketone. Standard EPDM gaskets swelled within two weeks. Viton gaskets solved the problem. Do not assume the fluid matches water. Give us the chemical name, concentration and any trace acids or solvents. A material safety data sheet helps shorten the quote and prevent warranty disputes.


Fluid Conductivity for Magnetic Flow Meters

Electromagnetic flow meters need a conductive liquid. The normal minimum is 5 µS/cm. Demineralized water, ultrapure water, many hydrocarbons and solvent based liquids fall below this. In those cases, choose a Coriolis mass flow meter or an oval gear meter. Some power plant customers ask for a magnetic flow meter on demin water. We tell them no. It will not measure reliably. A Coriolis meter works because it does not depend on conductivity. It measures mass directly and also gives density and temperature. Viscosity and Its Effect on Sizing

High viscosity changes pressure drop and meter linearity. For liquids above 100 cP, electromagnetic and Coriolis meters still work. Electromagnetic meters are unaffected by viscosity. Coriolis meters measure mass directly but may need a larger tube bore to reduce pressure drop. Oval gear meters are ideal for diesel, heavy fuel oil, molasses and polymer melts. A diesel flow meter with aluminum body and Viton seals handles 2 cP to 300 cP. For heavy oil at 1000 cP, use cast steel or stainless oval gear meter with heating jacket. Do not use a vortex meter for high viscosity. Vortex meters need turbulent flow and a Reynolds number above 20 000. In high viscosity fluids, the signal disappears.


Gas, Steam and Compressed Air Notes

For gases, pressure and temperature data matter more because volume changes with both. A thermal mass flow meter works well for compressed air, biogas and natural gas at 0.5 to 40 bar. For steam, use a vortex flow meter with pressure and temperature compensation. Give us steam pressure and temperature. Saturated steam at 10 bar and 184 °C is common. Superheated steam at 16 bar and 250 °C needs different density compensation. If you only say steam, the quote will be incomplete.


Recommended Models Based on Common Cases

For raw water, wastewater, seawater and slurry, we usually recommend an electromagnetic flow meter. Typical range is DN25 to DN1000 with rubber or PTFE liner, 316L or titanium electrodes, and 4-20 mA HART output. Specify IP68 for flooded pits or ATEX Zone 1 for solvent areas.

For chemicals, acids, alkalis and high viscosity fluids, a Coriolis mass flow meter is the fastest choice when conductivity is unknown. Wetted parts are 316L or Hastelloy C, sizes DN10 to DN150, with mass in kg/h, density and temperature output.

For diesel, fuel oil, lube oil and molasses, use an oval gear flow meter with aluminum or stainless steel body, pulse output and local totalizer. A Philippine fuel depot uses this type for diesel transfer at 200 L/min. For compressed air and biogas, choose a thermal mass flow meter with 4-20 mA and RS485. For steam, choose a vortex flow meter with integrated PT100 and pressure sensor.

Here is the thing. Do not send a long message such as I need a flow meter for water. Send this checklist instead. Fluid name and concentration. Operating temperature in °C and maximum temperature. Operating pressure in bar and maximum pressure. Pipe size in DN or inches. Flow range minimum, normal and maximum in m³/h or kg/h. Fluid density or viscosity if known. Conductivity for water based fluids. Flange standard and pressure rating. Hazardous area requirement such as ATEX Zone 1 or IECEx. Output and power such as 4-20 mA HART, pulse, RS485, 24 VDC. FAQ: Five Questions Engineers Ask Before Buying a Flow Meter

Q: Can I use an electromagnetic flow meter for diesel?

A: No. Diesel is non conductive. Use an oval gear flow meter or a Coriolis mass flow meter. An electromagnetic meter needs a water based fluid above 5 µS/cm.

Q: What happens if I do not know my exact flow range?

A: We size off the pipe diameter and pump curve. But the meter may lose accuracy at low flow. If possible, send the normal batch volume and cycle time. We can back calculate flow rate.

Q: Does pressure affect the flow meter reading?

A: For liquids, pressure has minor effect on volume. For gases and steam, pressure changes density and mass flow. Use pressure compensation or a Coriolis meter that measures mass directly.
