What Is a Wedge Flow Meter

A wedge flow meter forces process fluid around a V-shaped wedge. The wedge sits inside the pipe and creates a differential pressure across the restriction. A DP transmitter converts that pressure drop into a flow rate. The flow calculation uses the same Bernoulli principle as an orifice plate, but the shape is different.

The V shape leaves an open bottom gap. Solids can pass through that gap. In a viscous slurry line this matters. Most engineers skip this part, but a flat orifice plate can collect solids behind the plate. A wedge meter does not have a step where solids build up.

Why Wedge Flow Meters Work for Viscous Slurries

Viscous slurries have high cP values and often carry solid particles. They can blind an orifice plate, coat an ultrasonic sensor, or short a magnetic flow meter electrode. A wedge flow meter handles these conditions because it has no moving parts and no narrow impulse lines if you use remote seals.

For thick paper stock at 3 to 5 percent consistency, use a DN50 to DN200 wedge meter with stainless steel body. For mining tailings with 10 percent solids, use a hard facing option on the wedge.

In practice, a wedge meter works from low Reynolds numbers. This is useful for heavy crude oil, polymers, and concentrated sludge. The V-shaped restriction produces a stable DP signal even when flow is laminar.
